My journey to Batuu, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

An adventure to Batuu is truly unlike one I’ve ever experienced. Disney nailed the immersive experience for Star Wars fans, and even fans that don’t love Star Wars. I didn’t get a chance to do everything, so it’s not fair for me to give you a formal guide to Batuu…but at least learn from my experiences for when you get the chance to go.

For the story’s sake - I’ll give you the specific background right before I stepped foot into Batuu.

  • 5:55am - Entered the parking lot

  • 6:10am - Entered Disneyland and made our way to Star Wars Launch Bay in Tomorrowland

  • 6:20am - My group already had checked in and go our wristbands. Everyone proceeded to the left of Autopia to line up for Bauu

  • 6:57am - Disney cast members escort the 8a group to the Fantasyland entrance of Galaxy’s Edge

  • 7am-7:55am - The entire group stands at the wall of the entrance. Quite unbearable and closterphobic. Apparently the Fantasyland and Tomorrowland rides were open, but I was close to the front that I couldn’t move.

  • 7:55am - Go time into Batuu.

First up: Olga’s Cantina

My group split up between 1. the line of Olga’s Cantina (me, obviously) 2. the line at Savi’s Workshop for lightsabers 3. heading to the Droid Depot to find the gift cards/credit medallions. If you’re the first people in line, expect to get into those things right away. Part of the group didn’t get to see the lightsabers since we were at the front of every line.

Since I got into the Cantina at 8:30a, I don’t know the status of the line at 9a. But, the line 10 minutes after it opened was hundreds of people deep.

By far, Olga’s Cantina was my favorite part of Batuu.

Surprise, surprise right? It’s likely the 45 minute total time parties are allowed in Olga’s will stand when the land is open to the public due to the popularity. But, I wiggled my way in for longer. The music, the people, the bar…. it all felt like something out of a Star Wars movie. I was totally transcended to a different planet.

Get: The Yub Nub - pricey AF ($42) but a tasty Tiki drink with a souvenir cup.

Also get: the coasters. You’ll likely be given one for yourself period, not per drink. Be nice to the bartender and ask for another.

Beware: Jedi Mind Trick - I love alcohol more than the next guy, but I would skip this drink. Tastes almost like a version of a cleaning product.

Also beware: The Porg cup comes in a drink that’s non-alcoholic.

If you don’t stand in line for Olga’s Cantina, you should be in line for Savi’s Workshop to get your lightsaber.

Okay $200 is a lot on a souvenir, even for a Disney nerd like myself. When you walk up to Savi’s Workshop, you can’t say you want to “build a lightsaber.” You’ll need to say you’re looking for some “scrap metal.” But, it’s a completely customized lightsaber in which you get to choose the kind of lightsaber it is and every part in it.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run was a one-of-a-kind interactive ride, but I wouldn’t wait over an hour for it.

During the reservation period of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the wait for this ride was anywhere from 10-45 minutes. In this ride, you’re in the Falcon with 5 others and everyone will have a job to do between Pilots, Engineers, and Gunnars. To get the full experience, I would recommend trying to go on at least once with different positions.

Honestly, the interior design is almost just as good as the ride. It feels like the LEGIT Millennium Falcon. The one thing I really wished was to get a photo with me sitting in the iconic booth… it was too busy and the line into the ride moves almost too quick to get individual photos.

Everything in Batuu is a must-see but don’t forget these parts.

Blue & Green Milk - Weird in theory, actually good. It’s $8 per milk though, which was a bit pricey for my liking. If you have severe allergies to food, ask to know what’s in it first.

Black Spire Outfitters - Everything in Batuu makes you feel like you’re on another planet especially the Black Spire Outfitters. It feels like a marketplace, but the merchandise is very sub par.

Droid Depot - Who doesn’t want their own personal BB8? Yet again another souvenir that’s not cheap, but for $100 you can completely create a droid from scratch that’s remote operated. The line to create the droids can get extremely lengthy, so make sure to get there early to grab a droid. You can walk into the shop even if you’re not making one.

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities - Might be the coolest shop in any Disney park. You can buy stones to change your lightsaber here, and other very cool items. But what stunning is the intricacy of all the items on the second floor. Rumor has it, the original Ark of the Covenant from the Indiana Jones movies is up on the second floor…

Unfortunately, since I went at 8a… I don’t have an honest opinion of the food at Galaxy’s Edge because I chose alcohol over food. The one thing I ate was the purple and red popcorn… and it was rather disgusting.
